About the Artist

"Margarita Cabrera (born 1973) is a Mexican-American artist and activist. As an artist, the objects and activities she produces address issues related to border relations, labor practices and immigration. Her practice spans smaller textile-based soft sculptures to large community-involved public artworks." Wikipedia.  Her life-sized Hummer, for instance, is an American icon and symbol of military might. Its soft veneer, however, refers to its role as a disposable luxury item manufactured by anonymous laborers in Mexico for the select few who can afford them. Cabrera makes evident that the works are hand-made (sewn) by leaving the threads long and visible on the outside of the sculptures. Her work continues to be incredibly timely due to tariffs, renegotiations of NAFTA, and political circumstances.
