Cardenas, Leyla

Leyla Cardenas

Columbian, (born 1975-)

About the Artist

Colombian sculptor Leyla Cardenas’ work engages with the opposing labors of construction and deconstruction, as well as issues of ephemerality, absence and the immateriality of time. Her large-scale installation "Excision" is composed of materials mined from an abandoned 19th century house in Bogotá. When Cardenas found this house it was in the process of being demolished. She careful extracted a “slice” of one of the rooms, preserving fragments of the walls, ceiling, floor and even pieces of the furniture she found there. Her subsequent creation of this new structure from those restored pieces functions as an homage of sorts, a caution against forgetting one’s past or destroying one’s history.
