About the Artist
Astrid Bowlby is a Maine artist who lived in Philadelphia for many years where she taught drawing at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (PAFA). Her bold black and white drawing/ installations spread across the floor and up the walls and sometimes onto the ceilings of galleries. The net effect of all of this "spread" is a dense forrest of drawing, that confront the viewer at a scale not normally associated with drawing. Sometimes the edges are cut or shapes are cut and piled on top of one another to provide a dense layered arrangement. The West Collection owns one of these very large installations entitled "Draw Everything" where viewers to the original installation in a gallery suggested ideas for Bowlby to draw and those drawings would get added over time to the overall installation.
