About the Artist

Brooklyn-based artist Helen Garber uses an old master painting technique called grisaille to paint raw, but playful portraits of people from the world she is living in now. Garber has had experience with a diverse world of peers since leaving home at an early age. She paints everyone from Uptown society families to friends and bartenders. The portraits reveal her world, which includes all of the graphic details of tattoos, piercings and wrinkles. There is no way to deny the beauty of her hand in the works and no way to be free of her powerful imagery.
