About the Artist

Portland-based multi-disciplinary artist Heidi Cody often employs visual content from logos and product packaging in her works. 'American Alphabet' is a series of light-boxes printed with the letters of the alphabet, all extracted from recognizable corporate logos for products like Eggo Waffles, Lysol, and York Peppermint Patties. Viewers' ability to recognize the typeface of these products attests to the troubling pervasiveness of consumerism in our society. The West Collection proudly owns Cody's full "American Alphabet"--all 26 letters, and we've shown the full installation both at the SEI Campus in Oaks and the satellite office in London. The alluring and friendly seeming work gets viewers involved in a guessing game which evolves into a kind of test of their own consumerism. Cody's "Alphabet" is permanently on view in the lounge at Look West Collection.
